Operetta Theatre’s Founder & General Director Brief Biographical Note A true
Renaissance man in modern times, Guillermo Silva-Marin can claim experiences
as a performer, stage director, writer, set and lighting designer, teacher
and producer. His performing credits include engagements with major Canadian
symphony orchestras, the Canadian Opera Company, New York City Opera, the
Metropolitan Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Opera de San Juan and Opera Lyra in
Ottawa. Founded by Mr. Silva-Marin in 1985,
he is the continuing General Director of Toronto Operetta Theatre. His
directorial credits with the company include productions of DIE FLEDERMAUS,
THE MERRY WIDOW, DER ZIGEUNERBARON and THE CZARDAS PRINCESS as well as recent
productions of MY FAIR LADY, LEO THE ROYAL CADET, and THE MIKADO, among over
numerous others. Mr. Silva-Marin assumed the position of General Director of
the prestigious Opera in Concert in 1994 and is currently director of Summer
Opera Lyric Theatre and Research Centre. During his career, Mr. Silva-Marin
has staged a significant number of operas, operettas and works for the lyric
stage across Canada, the USA and his native Puerto Rico. After a successful
CARMEN FLAMENCO! with Arte Flamenco! Spanish Dance Co., he conceived and
directed PASION FLAMENCA with the same company in October 1997. Mr.
Silva-Marin debuted for Opera McGill at McGill University in Montreal as
stage director for Ravel’s L’ENFANT ET LES SORTILEGES and in the
course of four years staged Ward’s THE CRUCIBLE, Mozart’s LE
NOZZE DI FIGARO, Weisgall’s SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR,
Handel’s SEMELE, Verdi’s FALSTAFF and returned in 2004 for
Mozart’s IDOMENEO. Guillermo Silva-Marin is a recipient of the Chalmers Award, A Canada
